  • USA officially picked up "Royal Pains" starring Mark Feuerstein and ordered 11 episodes on top of the 2 hour pilot.  This is the first "doctor show" for the network as Jeff Watchel (exec VP of programming at USA) puts it. He says it's not a medical show because it's more "personal and offbeat".  No word yet on it's premiere date. source
  • It was just announced that new Showtime series "United States of Tara" starring Toni Collette ("Little Miss Sunshine") will be viewawble 2 weeks before the premiere on Netflix.  They did the same with "Californication" last year and it must have gone well because now they want to do it all the time. source
  • If you're a wrestling fan, well you know there's plenty of shows to watch every week with RAW, Smackdown!, TNA, ECW and so on.  Well, if you still think you're not getting your fill, you're in luck!  WGN America is coming into the ring with WWE Superstars!  This will be a mashup of the heavy hitters and divas from the entire WWE line up and is scheduled to air on Thursdays.  source
  • This just in!  Neil Patrck Harris (y'know...Doogie.  Or Dr. Horrible.) is going to host Saturday Night Live!  He had a super 2008 with his internet fame, Golden Globe and Emmy noms, now it looks like 2009 is going to be just as good for him.  It was leaked that he may appear a few weeks ago but NBC made it official today.  His show will air live this coming Saturday with musical guest Taylor Swift. source

"True Beauty", which premiere's tonight at 10pm eastern on ABC, is the newest project of producers Ashton Kutcher and Tyra Banks. The show asks what true beauty really is and attempts to redefine the concept.

The trick?  The contestants believe they're only being judged on their looks, but they're really being watched for their "inner beauty".

Let's meet the contestants:
  • Ashely Michaelson is a 21 year old Designer's Assistant from Rochester, NY with a background in pageants and a desire to live the life of a socialite.  She says people didn't get along with her in High Schoo because she is so pretty.
  • Billy Jeffrey is a 31 year old Chippendale's dancer from Lewiston, ID who also happens to run a vitamin shop franchise.  He can't hold down a relationship and claims it's because women don't get his drive to achieve his personal goals.
  • Chelsea Bush is a 21 year old model from Brentwood, TX who also has a pageant background. She's a southern belle who appears sweet, but she claims to have a mean girl side.
  • CJ Miller is a 26 year old barista from LA.  He claims to be very intelligent and charming and uses his looks to get the girl to pay the bill.  He also writes books on relationships for women, researching the subject personally.
  • Hadiyyah-Iah Sa'id is a 23 year old receptionist/audio engineer from Minneapolis, MN.  She rates herself a 20 out of 10 and claims she can get along with everyone....even if it's fake.
  • Joel Rush is a 26 year old imaging software salesman from Tampa, FL.  He's a party guy who admits he married his wife because she's "as hot as me, so she can relate to what I go through."
  • Julia Anderson is a 23 year old magician's assistant from Dallas, TX.  A former pageant winner of Miss Teen Texas in 2002 and Miss Grapevine 2008, she admits to being a hypocrite at times and considers it to be a quality...not a weakness.
  • Laura Leigh is a 21 year old model from Staten Island, NY.  A self proclaimed "drama queen", she is totally obsessed with her appearance and says she'd sell out her best friend for a million bucks.
  • Monique Santiago is a 21 year old Go Go Dancer from NY, NY.  She's the dancer with a brain who reads National Geographic and Scientific America for fun.
  • Ray Seltz is a 29 year old artist from San Diego, CA.  When people tell Ray he's beautiful, he assumes they want something from him, so he can be a little harsh.  Money is very important to him...must be why he gave up his job as an engineer to be an artist?
So, will you watch tonight's premiere?  I know I will.  I'd like to see what the show makes these "beauties" do.

Watch "True Beauty" tonight at 10pm eastern on ABC.

Kathy Griffin and Andersoon Cooper co-hosted a special live telecast of Times Square on New Years Eve and shortly after the ball dropped, Griffin used some choice words that got her in some hot water.

Apparently the star of "My Life on the D-List" got into it live with a heckler.

"Shut up! Why don't you get a job, buddy?" she told the heckler. "You know what, I don't go to your job and knock the d----s out of your mouth."

CNN was quick to go to commercial and the comment was later edited out for a rebroadcast.  Griffin claims she didn't know they were live at the time and if you've watched her show at all, well I'd like to believe her.  She's crass, no doubt, but I just can't picture her jeopardizing her relationship with Cooper.

CNN probably won't get much more than a wrist slap since there are no FCC rules regarding cable cussing.

Check out how it went down:

Dangerous Encounters - Jurassic Shark
Brady Barr holds onto a sixgill shark

Tonight at 8pm eastern on "Dangerous Encounters: Jurassic Shark", Dr. Brady Barr searches for one of the largest and most ancient sea creatures, the sixgill shark.  The goal is to learn more about where the 16 foot, 12,000 lb. giants live, migrate and how they behave since they currently have very little information.  Oh, and also find out why they have 6 gills instead of the usual 5.

The search takes place in Central America, 1,700 feet under water in a homemade submarine.  Yep...homemade and apparently very attractive to the sharks as they come straight to the sub, even trying to take a nip out of it.

Following that, Brady heads to the Seattle Aquarium where he is able to scuba dive with the sharks himself and later, to Hawaii where he joins biologist Dr. Dean Grubbs to discuss what they know about these amazing creatures.

The new episode airs tonight at 8pm eastern on National Geographic Channel. This kicks off 4 new episodes airing every Saturday in January.  Look out for next weeks new episode, "Dangerous Encounters: Croc Crisis"!

John Travolta and wife Kelly Preston's 16 year old son, Jett, passed away suddenly today.  They were on a family vacation in the Bahamas and first reports are that he had a seizure after falling and hitting his head in the bathtub.

Jett had suffered seizures in the past and was rumored to be autistic, though the family denied it saying he suffered from something called Kawasaki disease.  It's an inflammatory disorder of the artery walls that can lead to heart disease.

An autopsy will be done on Monday to determine what exactly happened to young Jett.  No matter what the cause, this is a terribly sad situation and my thoughts go out to their family.

No matter what the situation, I'm heart broken to hear this news.
